Agreed data-erasure process for IT hardware
Protecting sensitive company data or private files is the top priority when selling used hardware.
Software-based deletion
Working hard drives and SSDs can be overwritten using an agreed erasure process. This supports reuse where possible while keeping data handling clear.
Process documentation
For B2B customers, the agreed data-handling process and any documentation requirements can be clarified before handover.
Defective storage media
Storage media that can no longer be addressed by software are physically destroyed (shredded) to rule out any future access to the data.
How data handling is planned
Before handover, we discuss which storage media are included, which internal requirements apply and what evidence you need. This makes it possible to distinguish reusable hardware, media requiring special treatment and equipment with no recovery value.
1. Clarify the stock and requirements
For an initial assessment, details about the quantity, device type, hard drive or SSD and condition are useful. For company stock, an inventory list with serial numbers is especially helpful. Please also tell us whether you require documentation for each device.
2. Agree the process in advance
The suitable process depends on the storage media and the project. Working media may be handled using an agreed software-based process. Media that cannot be addressed are separated for further coordination. Physical destruction is only arranged when explicitly agreed.
3. Document handover and evidence
After the details are agreed, responsibilities, handover, inspection and any serial-number documentation are recorded. If you want to sell hardware, you can describe your data requirements directly in your buyback request.
